When this happens, people look for ways to re-establish their individuality.<\/p>\n

The anonymous airing of petty grievances on and about the pavement is a satisfying way of alleviating feelings of powerlessness.<\/p>\n

People paint \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcBread is making birds sick\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/a> on areas where other people feed pigeons; they chalk circles around dog droppings and write \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcFilthy dog owner\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n

‘Whose dog?’, Balmain (Sydney), 2012.<\/p><\/div>\n

Their notices are rather like the notes that are left in the kitchens and bathrooms of workplaces and share houses to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcWash up after yourself\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcUse the toilet brush\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. Someone who \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbreaks the rules\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is rebuked, without the need for face-to-face confrontation. Pavement remonstrations are delivered and received with eyes lowered, and in this way public decorum is maintained.<\/p>\n
